For years the construction industry has seemed removed from cyber events because of the limited personal information they keep.  However, today they are one of the leading industries being impacted by data security breaches.   Why?  Cyber criminals knew that, to date, the construction industry had avoided heavy regulation in data security and privacy laws thus now making them easy targets.  Many construction companies have confidential and proprietary information digitally stored and shared across projects and across many IT chains.  Via ransomware or any similar event, cyber criminals can extort money by holding a construction company’s data hostage in addition to causing a company to lose revenue with downtime/business interruption not to mention breaching their intellectual property and breaching bid data.  Construction companies can also fall victim to fraudulent wire transfers.
