In 2021, education and research were top targets for cyberattacks averaging 1605 attacks per organization per week. This is 75% increase from 2020. Because of COVID-19, many employees worked remotely as well as non-employees accessing their systems thus widening their exposure and elevating security risks. K-12 schools make good targets because they store a wealth of information such as personal information (which can be sold or used), salaries, gradebooks, door codes along with donor lists and financial information. Stealing student identities is a hot commodity as credit checks are rarely done on children and the fraud may take 20 years or so to even be discovered.
