Like construction companies, engineering companies have been able to escape many of the regulations placed up healthcare, financial, and retail institutions. However, a few years ago engineering companies doing business with government agencies were brought into awareness of cyber compliance with NIST. In 2020, many workers begin working remotely from home and many companies were not security ready but cyber attackers were. Engineering companies have now found themselves target of ransomware and phishing schemes. Criminals rely on employees to have little security training and knowledge of cyberattacks. Stealing or ransomware demands of Intellectual property is a growing crime. While a company will become aware of a ransomware demand, they may night be aware that a hacker has accessed their system and quietly stolen their data until their trade secrets are used elsewhere.
